Welcome to The Black Shed… so much more than just your typical café!

We are a community hub situated alongside the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal in the lovely rural village of Slimbridge, just a short drive from Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud and Bristol.

Our sun-trap canal side location provides fantastic boating and wildlife sights all year round, where no two days are the same.

In addition to our fabulous café, we also offer boat trips and canal cruises, a local craft market, a boat brokerage and lots of other leisure activities.

The Black Shed also provides a unique venue for parties and wedding receptions — ideal if you want to celebrate somewhere that’s a little bit different which really embraces the natural world.

How To Find Us

Whether you are walking, cycling the towpath or coming via road, we are accessible from a variety of routes. Check our maps for more details.

If coming from the M5, take exits 13 or 14 and follow the signs for Slimbridge Wetlands and Wildfowl Trust.

From the A38, follow the brown signs for the Wetlands and Wildfowl Trust or Tudor Caravan Park, go through Slimbridge village and into Shepherd's Patch.

As the road draws into a bridge over the canal, we are on your right hand side.

Towpath Walks

If you are enjoying the fresh air on our towpaths, you can find us a short 3 mile walk away from our neighbouring canal side villages Purton and Saul Junction.

A good reason to stop, relax and refuel when you get here!

Explore 200 Years of Canal History!

The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal has hosted a huge variety of craft during its time, from working barges, to Victorian paddle steamers, rigged Tall Ships, and even 2 British submarines!

Today we have an exciting mix of working and leisure boats of all shapes and sizes lazily cruising up and down its 16 miles, including historical wooden vessels, Dutch barges, narrowboats and cruisers.

Many small craft enjoy the canal's meandering waters, transforming it from a man-made industrial route into a natural oasis that we can all share with the varied flora and fauna which live alongside its banks.

Living in Harmony

The past 5 years have been full of energy and hard work to create an amazing atmosphere in our café. The Black Shed has truly become the community hub that we envisioned.

Our resident swans with their young ones come to visit each season to see our progress, and from eating to boating to other leisure activities to events, we are truly proud of everything we now offer at our beautiful gem on the banks of the Gloucester & Sharpness canal.

Exciting times still lie ahead though, with new projects we are now working on with Canal and River Ecologists, where we are exploring the planting of our wild spaces for the benefit of both the local wildlife and everyone who uses The Black Shed and its surroundings.

We invite you to come and share our progress.
